REMOTE SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPY:
A RESEARCH AND TEACHING TOOL

Remote Access Overview

The Characterization Facility’s JEOL 6500 and 6700 Field Emission Gun Scanning Electron Microscopes are configured with "WebSEM" remote access software.  WebSEM enables the images and major control functions of the FEGSEM to be displayed on an Internet Explorer Browser in an external user PC.

The live image displayed on the client computer consists of 640 x 480 pixels.  High quality images (1280 x 1024 pixels) can be transferred to and saved in the user PC.  The friendly graphical user-interface allows the client access to most microscope control functions through button and dragging operations using a mouse.  A console with knob controls is also available.

The WebSEM software can be transferred from the Characterization Facility server to the client computer.  Combined with free remote desktop software such as "UltraVNC", WebSEM will enable remote users virtually the same capabilities that on-site users have for secondary and backscatter electron imaging as well as elemental analysis.  WebSEM currently requires Windows 2000 or XP on the remote client PC.
