File Storage and Access
at the Characterization Facility

There is now a new dedicated user secure file server in the Characterization Facility called CFSERVER.  You can store data in a subdirectory or subfolder of UserFiles that is labeled with your Charfac code number.  Data stored in this folder will NOT be archived and may be deleted after 30 days.  All files and folders left on the server over 90 days will be automatically deleted.

You can access files by using the IP address 160.94.16.167.  You will be required to enter your username (Charfac code number) and your Charfac password.  If you do not know this password, please see the facility staff.  Multiple incorrect password attempts will disable the sftp access until further notice.  You may create subfolders only within your individual folder.  There is a 200 MB-limit on the main folder, so be sure to delete old files so that you have space available for the next session.  If you find that you need more space than this for 1 or 2 sessions, please ask Mike Boucher, our lab manager in room 18, to have your limit increased.  If you do not see a folder with your code number, please see Mike to have him create one.  Other staff members will be able to do this as well soon.

How to get access to CFSERVER

If you are inside the Charfac and using WinNT4, Win2K, or WinXP, you can use network neighborhood; Charfac Domain; CFServer/Userfiles (160.94.16.167).  If that does not work, use the add a network place in Explorer, using this as the location:  \\CFServer\Userfiles\

When you operate an instrument computer, your Charfac code number folder is automatically mapped as a network drive when you login.  If you are using Win98 or 95, you will have to save the data on the local instrument hard drive and then use an sftp program such as WinSCP3 to move it to the CFServer.  Please delete it on the local hard drive after transfer.

If you are using a Mac computer with OS9 (room 22 and the 1210), you need to click on the Apple icon on the upper right and select Chooser.  Click on the AppleShare icon, then click on Server IP Address.  Enter the IP address (160.94.16.167), then your Charfac code number and Charfac password.  You must close the server at the end of your session by dragging it to the wastebasket icon or others will end up using it accidentally.  If you don't, you will end up with data that is not yours and the other user will not be able to access their data at a later time.

If you are outside the Charfac you will need to use an sftp program such as WinSCP3.  WinSCP3 works with some minor issues on Win95 and Win98 machines.  You can download WinSCP3 at winscp.net/eng/index.php.  Depending on your situation, you may not want the program to save passwords on the local computer.  Make your choices accordingly.

For Mac OSX, you can download Fugu from rsug.itd.umich.edu/software/fugu.

If you have any problems with the new system, please see Mike Boucher or another staff member.

Other Options For Your Data

Most of the Charfac computers now have a CD-RW drive associated with them.  If the computer that you are using does not have one, then you can use one of the computers in the user room to access the CFServer.

Many of the computers also have a USB port that can be used for flash drives, but be sure to ground yourself before plugging them in.

Besides the CD-RW burners on most of the newer PCs, 2 DVD burners are available, one in the non-networked FEGTEM remote computer for FEI TEM use only and one in the networked room 22 user computer.  We strongly recommend that you take advantage of these options!

Please remember, your data is NOT Backed up and is subject to deletion after 30 days.
